Breakthrough Innovation: Research Supported by Canada’s Heart and Stroke Foundation
February is Heart Month! Folks are out canvassing for the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s annual February drive for funds.
As an insurance agent, whose product portfolio includes “Critical Illness Insurance”, and with industry statistics that show 84% of claims made are for Heart Attacks, Strokes and Cancer. I participate in the fundraising to be more knowledgeable about 2 of the life-threatening illnesses.
Here is what I learned recently;
What I also found out – Canada is a world leader in research and innovation that has led to saving lives and creating more survivors. A new treatment developed in Canada, by Canadian specialists was shown to cut in HALF the death rate from major ischemic strokes in a trial. That trial was co-funded by the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Breakthrough innovation!
Further, I learned about Heart Failure and the fact that;
600,000 Canadians are living with heart failure and 50,000 more are diagnosed every year!
“Epidemic proportions in North America” a leading researcher states. His research, with funding from the Heart and Stroke Foundation is looking at repairing damaged tissues in the heart muscle after a heart attack that will stimulate the development of new blood vessels allowing the
“Heart to Heal itself!”
Breakthrough innovation!
Did you know, nine in ten Canadians have at least one risk factor of heart disease and stroke, while 80% of premature heart diseases and stroke can be prevented through healthy behaviours.
The news that research into these two deadly diseases is producing results that are saving lives through drugs administered within 3 hours of a stroke, and returning the patient to a full and active life following the event within a relatively short time frame is again. Breakthrough innovation!
The insurance industry recognized several years ago, that people were returning to their lives, despite serious health conditions or that diagnosis of certain conditions didn’t lead to death, but included periods of exacerbation from disease (as in certain cancers) remissions, and other long-term disabilities. The most important time to respond to the financial crisis that occurs with sudden unexpected illness like a Heart attack or Stroke, is at diagnosis, and before treatment begins.
Worrying about bills and financial obligations can create stress and anxiety and even lead to slow recovery or delays in rehabilitation progress. What about “R & R” after such a frightening event?
A lump sum to replace lost income, pay bills and continue a lifestyle while recovering from a life-threatening, treatable condition. The Living Benefit!
Critical Illness insurance generally covers 23 conditions which people recover from or are disabilities that have a prolonged progression. Critical Illness is paid on DIAGNOSIS and in addition to any other income replacement benefits including government benefits. The money from a Critical Illness policy can be used at the insured’s discretion; pay off a mortgage, take a vacation, use it to replace lost wages, whatever.
